Now, what do I do?

Question: Does God have any expectations of us after we have accepted Jesus as our Savior?

Answer: Yes! Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments." (John 14:15 NKJV) Once we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, our lives are no longer our own. We make a commitment to live our lives for Him. We put God first!

Of course, when we first accept Christ as Savior, we are usually new to understanding God's Word. We are like "babes in Christ." The Apostle Peter tells us "as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow..." (1 Peter 2:2) That's why we need to regularly study God's Holy Word, the Bible, and pray for understanding of how He wants us to live. So, as we grow in God's Word, "we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness by which they lie in wait to deceive, but speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head - Christ..." ( Ephesians 4: 14-15)

Also, as we grow spiritually, we should get stronger in walking (living life) in the Spirit, and not fulfilling the lust of the flesh. (Galatians 5:16) We learn from the Apostle Paul that "the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication (sexual immorality), uncleanness, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21)

As Believers, these things should no longer be a part of our lifestyle!

On the other hand, "the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (Galatians 5:22-25)

And, because God knows none of us is able to live for Him on our own ability He has provided all Believers with the Helper, God's Holy Spirit! We can pray for the Holy Spirit to strengthen and guide us as we live each day for God. Jesus said His Spirit will "teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." (John 14:26)

Therefore, we know from the Scriptures that God definitely has expectations of us after we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord. He has given Believers instructions through His written Word as to how we should live lives pleasing to Him. God has also provided His Holy Spirit to help strengthen and guide us in living a righteous life. Remember that God knows we are still going to fall short and sin sometimes. Only Jesus lived a perfect life. But, we can be thankful that Jesus is willing to forgive us of our sins when we confess them to Him (see 1 John 1:9).

Finally, to underscore the importance of learning and growing in God's Word, one need look no further than the final instructions from Jesus to His disciples, The Great Commission found in Matthew 28:19-20. Jesus said, "'Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.' Amen."
