Did you know that it was God who created sex?

Question: Should Christians treat the subject of sex as taboo?

Answer:  No. In fact, Christians should be bold in spreading the truth about the role sex plays in our lives.  Because contrary to the constant messages we get from the media that make it seem like sex is something defined by humans, it was actually God who created sex.  As such, He is the only one who gets to set the rules for His creation!

The Bible gives us clear teachings on God’s design for sex. When God created the first man and woman, Adam and Eve, He laid out His plan for them — and us — in Genesis 2:24:  “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” (NKJV)  God made the male and female bodies to physically join together as becoming one flesh during sex.  Later we read that “Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, ‘I have gotten a man from the Lord.”  Here, we see that one purpose God has for this sexual union between husband and wife is to produce children.  We know that God designed the woman’s body with the reproductive organs to get pregnant and give birth to a child.

In Song of Solomon, we also learn that God intends for the husband and wife’s sexual union to be one of pleasure.  This book of the Bible is filled with descriptions of the attraction and passion shared between this bridegroom and his bride.  For example in chapters 4 and 7 the bridegroom vividly describes the beauty of his bride’s body — her lips, her thighs, her breasts, etc.  In chapter 5, we read the bride’s equally passionate description of her groom — his wavy hair, his eyes, his legs being like “pillars of marble,” and his mouth being “most sweet.”  Similar bold physical descriptions are found in the words of wisdom of Proverbs 5:18-19.  It reads, “…Rejoice with the wife of your youth… Let her breasts satisfy you at all times; And always be enraptured with her love.”

Unfortunately, the world mostly promotes sex to be the opposite of what God intended. This opposition to God shows up in the world’s promotion of pre-marital sex, pornography, prostitution, and every other sexual relationship outside of sex between the husband and his wife. That’s because the world follows after Satan instead of after God.  Satan represents all that is opposite to the Word of God.  God created sex to be between one man and one woman who are married to each other.  Period.  Jesus reinforced this truth in Matthew 19:4-6, when He said, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh’ ?  So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.’ ”

It’s easy to see the consequences of going against God’s will for sex.  Despite living in a time of so-called sexual freedom, it’s anything but freedom for many.  Our society is being overwhelmed by unintended pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, human trafficking, and other sex-related ills.  Even our children are being sexualized through some of today’s clothing styles and pop culture.  On the other hand, monogamous married couples report the greatest level of satisfaction with their sex lives, as shown in this poll commissioned by Parade magazine:  https://www.imom.com/poll-shows-sex-within-marriage-is-more-fulfilling/

Remember, despite the messages you may get from popular media, it was God who created sex.  It’s His gift to us — when we choose to experience it His way!
